Steve Williams is the Kim Kardashian of Golf, both have used the media to build a high profile that should never have existed.

A good Golf Caddy can be Sherpa, Mentor, Coach, Doctor and more to a professional golfer. But the best caddy also keeps out of the media spotlight and lets the player go about their business. Only a true golf tragic would be able to tell you who caddied for Nicklaus, Palmer or Watson. And who is currently Tiger Woods caddy?

The caddy’s to the Worlds top players generally “turn up, keep up and shut up”. Which brings us to Steve Williams, no doubt one of the best caddy’s and bag-man until recently to Tiger Woods. Carrying Tiger’s clubs allowed Williams to become the highest paid “sportsman” in New Zealand. However Williams wasn’t content with sitting in Tigers shadows and built up his own media profile. This included quotes in media and public on other players such as Phil Mickelson.

His move away from Tiger was always going to happen, and he has definitely helped Adam Scotts game. However he hasnt been content to carry Scotts clubs, and his mouth has put him onto the backpages of Newspapers, and the front pages of blogs. He claimed he’d just had “the greatest week of my life” after Scott won recently, having caddied for Woods in many Majors, this was an open handed slap in Woods face.

And onto this weekend, when Williams referred to Woods as a “black a*hole” causing media hysterics on the eve of the biggest 3 weeks in Australian golf. Many golfers past and present have called on Scott to dismiss Williams, to have the PGA ban him. It looks like none of this will happen and the media will have a frenzy anytime Scott gets within 5 iron distance of Woods.

Ideally Williams keeps his mouth shut and allows Scott to play to his best ability.

Jamie and Mike, the legendary kiwi golfers who are playing a round of golf every day for the whole year are currently working their way through Scotland on their epic adventure. The lads have played 216 rounds through New Zealand, Australia, North America and now UK. Their blog – is a must read documenting every round, the highs, lows and the characters they meet along the way. The guys mentioned that a book could be on the cards, I hope so, it would be a great read.

Not surprisingly, they have been able to generate a lot of media exposure along the way, this recent article in the New York Post is a good one, documenting their travels and the great courses they have played. It also quotes John Sabino, the Top 100 Golfer who I was lucky to play Kingston Links with earlier in the year, and was able to introduce to Jamie and Mike. John hosted the guys in New York, sharing a common bond of the love of golf, and the slightly crazy aspirations and dreams that golfers have worldwide.

The Easter Mini Golf Invitational was held at the Maroondah Adventure Park earlier today. Sam, Becca (complete with easter bunny ears), Mum and Dad played a closely contested round on the Lakes Course, a tough Par 56 layout including water hazards, bunkers, multileveled greens, and some pretty funky tubes and channels. Sam started the strongest, whilst Mum and Dad traded putts, and Becca tried to come to grips with the tricky greens. But a hole in one on the 8th got Becca back in the game. Sam led by 2 shots from Mum and Becca after 8 holes, Dad was struggling after disaster on the 9th!

By the time we got to the final hole, Becca and Sam were leading Mum and Dad by a single shot. The final hole is a long par 5 (quite rare on a mini golf course!), over multiple levels, the ball is carried along tubes and down tunnels. Becca played the hole the best and finished in first place with a score of 62, Sam finished second with 63, followed by Dad on 65 and Mum on 66. Congratulations Becca !
