Italy has hoisted the World Cup aloft having defeated France in a penalty shootout. At least thats what happened in reality. My virtual parallel reality played out on the PS2 had Australia defeating the Italians, then easily accounting for Ukraine. They knocked out Germany in the semi final, and progressed to the Final against France.

After a tense opening to the game, it was Kewell who scored in the 29th minute to give Australia the lead. 10 minutes later, a rare attack by the French was rewarded with some Zidane magic as he avoided 3 defenders and chipped Schwartzer for the equaliser

All tied at half time, the Australians went on all out attack in the second half. The pressure showed with missed opportunities to Cahill and Kewell. The French also showed that their diving skills were worthy of a gold medal.

The game went to extra time but no team was either to score, so the decision went to penalties. With both teams scoring first, Bresciano’s shot was saved by the French keeper. Schwartzer saved the next penalty, but it was Kewell who failed to put his shot away and France were able to score and win the World Cup.

Australia had the perfect start with a goal to Viduka in the 3rd minute. But disaster towards the end of the half as a crude Moore tackle sent Ballack to the penalty spot, converting for a 1-1 halftime score and Australia down to 10 men. Still tied at end of full time, the game went into extra time. A nasty injury to Emerton, and some quick substitutes bought Archie Thompson on for his first game of the Cup. The move proved to be a master stroke with Archie scoring in the dying seconds of the game for a 2-1 win. Australia was going to the World Cup Final!!!!!
