Masters Final Round – Tigermania wins, $3m well spent
November 15th, 2009 by Doogs
Tiger shared the lead into the final round of the Australian Masters, but given his third round form and signs of anger and frustration the result wasnt a forgone conclusion. Nitties, Chalmers and Dufner were in the hunt, Appleby and Scott not far off the pace. Tigers 3 birdies in the first six holes pretty much sealed the deal, Tiger was back in form, happy and calm. The challengers came and went but no-one could threaten his lead. Tigers only blemish was a bogey on the 13th, but a superb birdie on the 15th got the engraver notching the trophy and the fat lady punching out the high notes.
As the dust settles on Kingston Heath, and after over 100,000 had traipsed the galleries during the week, there was a lot of dust, the questions are asked whether it was worth the $3million. I say, hell yeah! Golf hasnt had that sort of profile in Australia for a long time, Tigermania put Melbourne in the global sports spotlight and promoted our great golf courses, particularly the sandbelt and Kingston Heath. Most of the people I spoke to on Friday at the Masters in our ‘Golf in Victoria’ tent were from interstate and spending money on accommodation, food, wine and golf. They were also keen to return to play our golf courses.
If Tiger want to come back next year, get out the checkbook and lets do it all again at Victoria Golf Club. Then the following year Tiger is back for the Presidents Cup, and he is bringing his mates (and Phil too!)
Thanks Tiger for one hell of a week, “You da man!”
