Tigermania is sweeping Melbourne, and from Thursday thousands will decend on Kingston Heath to follow one man. Many will not have been to a golf tournament before. One comment I heard today was “There doesnt seem to be enough grandstands to hold everyone”, all those specatators used to the comfort of a seat at the tennis will be surprised. Tips for watching the golf are posted on the Masters website – http://www.australianmasters.com.au/.

Spectating at a golf tournament can be great, getting closeup to the players, getting perspectives of the sheer power, distance and accuracy, the sights and sounds. But it can also be a pain, pushed along in the surge for the next hole, peering between shoulders, walking long distances and standing in the sun for long periods, dust, dirt and flies. Newbies will quickly realise that its not like the tennis or motor racing, you need to keep moving if you want to keep up with the action.

My tips * Get a spot at the 15th green for while to watch the inevitable carnage, especially if its windy. The short par 3 is a classic hole, slick green, steep approach and huge bunkers.

  • Thousands will try to follow Tiger hole by hole, but it will be a nightmare. I prefer to rove ahead, find a good spot and then watch the groups ahead come through, then watch the lead group aka Tiger, then move ahead a few holes and repeat

  • Give the crowds a miss for a while and find a group of lesser known pro’s and follow them. Better chance to see the action and get up close

  • Lots of water, comfy shoes, course layout map are essential

Kingstonheath The 15th, a great par 3
