Bushfire fundraising at the Growling Frog
February 14th, 2009 by Doogs
Early Saturday morning start to play in a Bushfire Fundraising competition at the Growling Frog. The sun rose deep red through the smoke that is moving across Melbourne from the still burning fires in the North East. The bushfires of 7th February were close to the Growling Frog Golf Course and tragically a number of members lost family and property in the Kinglake fires.
To support those members, and the rest of the community, the members donated all competition fees plus ran fundraising activities, raffle and BBQ this morning. More activities are planned.
The competition was par, and played with new member Ben, and Declan. Both were off 5, so I was definitely the high handicapper on 16. Again, a par on the first, then a more ominous 3 putt on the 2nd, was followed by 5 minuses in a row. Got to love par! Finally sunk a par putt on 8 and finished -3. Some stability to the game starting the back nine reasonably well, hit a solid 6 iron into 12th, 3 putts! Finally a good drive, sand wedge and sank a birdie putt on 14th. But slipped up with 3 minuses and halved the last for -2, and -5 in total. Not a great round, the short game within 100m was pretty poor. Ben played the best round Ive seen played at the Frog first hand, carding a 70 off the stick, awesome round for +5.
But the golf wasnt really the main thing today, and everyone was digging deep for the cause which was fantastic.
