DaCosta wins Laguna Challenge
January 8th, 2009 by Doogs
The Laguna Challenge was the first King Challenge event of 2009 with 27 holes played over two days at the Laguna Quays Turtle Point course. As noted in previous blog, the course conditioning was poor but the layout was still fitting for a Challenge. As usual, I started well, Steve was also hitting the ball straight and long with some solid iron shots. Rob took a while to get going and spent some time in the rough, though managed to find about 3 balls for every lost one!
Mid way through the round, my iron swing deserted me, and the short game fell apart. Whilst the driver was good, approaches were poor, and the course does punish wayward shots. Steve’s 20 points on the front nine put him 6 points up and was going to take some beating. The hot and humid conditions didnt help, and despite a minor recovery and birdie on the 17th, Steve was well in front. Robs game improved with a great par on the 11th, and some nice drives.

Going into day 2, Steve had an almost unassailable lead. Rob decided enough was enough and settled in with the paper instead. Better golf was played over the 9 holes on the backnine at Laguna (which is the better 9). Steve birdied 17 and despite a minor fightback from Mike, took a comfortable victory on the final hole to take the Laguna Challenge.
