Matchplay comeback from jaws of defeat at the Growling Frog
June 4th, 2008 by Doogs
Havent been keeping ye olde blog up to date….so catching up on recent news.
Played the first round of the Herald Sun Matchplay comp recently. Have played in this competition over the last couple of years and made it to about the fourth round a few years ago:
2006 – Won the first round 2/1 , but was out in the second round with a comprehensive thrashing 6/5
2007 – Won the first round 3/2, then lost a close game 1 up in the second round
Teed off with Graeme, a Yarrambat member, at the Growling Frog, which gave me a vague home ground advantage. He was off 20, so had 3 shots on me. After winning the first, my game was shaky with drives off course and short game inconsistent. Graeme won 2nd and 3rd, but then after driving into a pond on the 4th, I smacked a 7 iron close and took the win, then the next 2 holes to go 2 up. Good golf from both players halved the next two holes before I hacked the 9th to hand Graeme a win. 1 up going into the backnine.
Traded blows on the 10th to 13th with a win each, but then Graeme hit form and won 14, dropped a huge putt to win 15 and then won 16 to go 2 up with 2 to play. Suddenly the comfort zone was gone and I was staring at a defeat. Hit the 17th in two, as Graeme struggled and made the par to win. The tough 18th gave Graeme a shot on me, but I cracked a big drive and hit 8 iron into the green. Putted for par then Graeme has a makeable putt to halve and win the game, his putt was right on line but stopped on the edge, leaving us all square after 18.
We returned to the 1st tee to decide a winner, both got our drives away. Graeme’s second hit the bunker, my second was short but safe. Both played to close to the pin, my par putt dropped, Graeme;s missed, Game over! Had parred the final three holes to come back from the dead, it aint over till its over!
Nice come back there mate! Good luck for the next round.
