Tiger Woods or the Grand Prix
February 4th, 2008 by Doogs
The Melbourne Grand Prix costs the State Government approx $40 million to stage each year, key benefits include increased visitors during the event, media and television exposure, leading to increased awareness of the destination and more visitors. Many are currently arguing whether, despite all of these benefits, its worth the money.
Interesting alternative discussed on 3AW today, with Gerard Healy suggesting that the money be spent on increasing the prize pool on a couple of golf tournaments and getting Tiger Woods, and supporting top world golfers out to play in Melbourne and promote our golf tourism.
Melbourne is blessed with some of the best golfing on the planet, from the classic sandbelt courses through to the sensational links courses on the Mornington Peninsula and Bellarine. Spread the $40 million over 4 years to back a couple of big World standard fields on some of the Worlds best courses and the worlds eye would turn to Melbourne, plus the golf tourism business would skyrocket. I like it, maybe its time for the Grand Prix to go elsewhere and Melbourne to become Tigers home away from home.
I like it!
Instead of just 4 days of F1 we could have weeks of top quality golf.
