Matchplay round two – Close but no cigar…
July 12th, 2007 by Doogs
Second round of the Herald Sun Matchplay and was paired with Bob from Latrobe. Dont consider home ground advantage to mean much so agreed to play at Latrobe, a good layout near Fairfield in Melbourne inner suburbia. Bob was off 12, so spotted me 5 shots to start. Off to a great start with a par on the opening hole and a win. Some crap bunker play on the second got us back to square. We traded shots over the opening nine, with Bob hitting form before my short game saved a par on the 9th to square the game.
The game was close through the back nine, again my short game kept me in the contest, as did Bobs! Disaster on the 13th saw Bob go two holes up, then Bob cracked 3 putting from nowhere on the 15th. I had a strong par on 16 to even the contest again with two holes to play, but then an average approach opened the door for Bob on 17. My putt was in all the way until the last roll, cruelly staying out to give Bob the advantage into the final hole. Alas, a poor approach and a putt left agonisingly close gave Bob the win, 1 up. Really enjoyable round nonetheless, good company, competitive play, golf the winner!
