The Herald Sun Matchplay is an annual competition open to all handicap golfers. You are matched with another player, then arrange a time and venue for the game. My first round opponent was Danny, an Eastwood member of 13. We decided on Waterford Valley as the venue and teed up yesterday.  See my review Hadnt played since the destruction of Brooklands about a month ago, so wasnt sure on the form but a regulation par on the 1st gave me a win straight up. The ugly putter reared its head on the second and it was back to all square. Dannys game was struggling and I managed pars on 3, 7 and 9, and was 5 holes up at the turn. Danny suddenly turned his game around much to my horror, as i returned to average golf. He won holes 10, 12, 13 and 15 as I held together with wins on 11 and 14. So standing on the 16th tee I was 3 up with 3 to play. I had a shot on the long par 4, and needed it as a stumbled to a 6, Danny had the chance to hole a makeable putt and keep the game alive but the ball lipped out. A first round win – 3 and 2.
