Crashed and Burnt

Some days just aren’t meant for golf (sad but true!). Today was one of those days. Second round of the Herald Sun Matchplay, paired against Cameron a tennis teacher from Heidelberg Golf Club. With no practice since the last round, the swing felt closer to an axe swinging into wood than the smooth arc of a golf club.

As per last round, my opponent was out of the blocks early with birdies and a par. Down by 3 holes early, I scraped and hacked well enough to be only 3 down at the turn. But the axe swing remained, the ball making woeful patterns through the air towards rough, trees and rarely fairway. Mercifully it was over 4 holes later, as Cameron sunk another putt for a birdie and a comprehensive 6 and 5 defeat. (For the ungolfers thats 6 up with 5 holes to play!).

Played the remainder of the holes in the same degree of lacklustre ordinariness.

  1. [...] Following Wednesdays debacle I was ready to put the clubs into hybernation for a few months! So as I stood on the tee at the Frog with mates Bondy and Jim, the mental images of hacked, hooked and scuffed shots flooded back. After two holes, the swing was still slightly axe-like but some miraculously previous snapped neural swing nerves suddenly fused together on the 3rd hole as the driver went long and straight! Even more astounding the second shot with the inconsistent rescue club went straight finishing just short of the par 5 green, 2 putts – birdie! [...]
